Mmm. Lavender Butterfly Tea.  Which has the benefit of being both a muscle relaxant and full of happy anioxidants.   And mighty tasty, as well.

Happy birthday, Melanie!!!!

Sunday, September 16, 2007

For some reason I always find myself a bit contemplative in the fall.  Maybe it's the passing of the season, or the promise of new beginnings in the academic world, or just that the sound of geese and the smell of bonfires tugs at something deeper.  This year I seem to be reading poetry, which I've never really done before.  So, in honor of the beginning of a new school year, two poems from Wendell Berry, both from the collection Given:

What consolation it is, after
the explanations and the predictions
of further explanations still
to come, to return unpersuaded
to the woods, entering again
the presence of the blessed trees.
A tree forms itself in answer
to its place and to the light.
Explain it how you will, the only
thing explainable will be
your explanation.  There is
in the woods on a summer's
morning, birdsong all around
from guess where, nowhere
that rigid measure which predicts
only humankind's demise.

I have a feeling I'll be returning to this one as I start to write my thesis, trying to come up with 'explanations' for things inexplicable.  Hopefully I'll be reading it under a tree (or on a boulder near the sea).

And a good prayer for all of us trying to find meaning in our daily toil:

Teach me work that honors Thy work,
the true economies of goods and words,
to make my arts compatible
with the songs of the local birds.

Teach me patience beyond work
and, beyond patience, the blest
Sabbath of Thy unresting love
which lights all things and gives rest.

I'm not actually taking any classes this semester, which is rather odd.  I am, however, teaching.  Two lab sections of ecology, and one nine year old homeschooler.  Thus I find myself busier than I have ever been, and surprisingly happy doing it--thus far (ask me again after the first set of grading!).  I was afraid that teaching college level would be impossible, but the first week of labs went surprisingly well.  I guess it's my inner bossiness coming through.  And for my  homeschooler we're alternating field trips with some 'kitchen science', so I get to play outside and make up fun labs, and get paid for it.  I still don't think I want to teach in a traditional classroom or university academic setting, but perhaps I should reconsider some for of education in my future career options.

Also, cooler weather may mean ice cream gets eaten less often, but it also means it's tea season!  Good thing my cupboard is fully stocked....Currently enjoying Crepe Fair, from Stash, and Spicy Licorice Mint from the local fair trade organic White Heron Tea Company.  Perhaps I should revive the currently drinking feature?  Hmm.  Good way to procrastinate.

(look Melanie, I updated! )

Happy...holiday? What's that?

Posting this, of course, from the lab.

Somehow, even though (because?) I took two days off last week and will take a 3 day wknd this week, the fact that I am in fact working on a Federal holiday never fails to make me inexplicably cranky.

Hope y'all are enjoying the fireworks!  I'm looking forward to camping with me mum this weekend.

so I think it's time I updated.

My cousin Mel is visiting for a week, and has decided that I need to update my xanga (which is true), so she wrote me the following (which is mostly true--take it with a grain of salt.  Sea salt, preferably).

Hey, I'm sorry that I haven't updated in such a long time. I've been really busy with lots of other pointless things that I didn't really need to do. Procrastination, you know. So last week, I murdered all of my snails in a drunken rage.Well, it was more of "I accidently killed them all," but that's so too boring sounding for me. I was rather cranky for the rest of the day, but I'm over it now.
So at 4:30 this morning, my wonderful cousin and I went out to collect more snails. Although forcing her into measuring dead snails was much fun, I decided that it was time to get some new ones. So we went out into the pleasantly freezing water that nearly turned mel's hands a pretty shade of blue. We managed to get all of the regular snails that we need, but we still need a couple hundred more algae covered ones. I'm thinking about throwing away the treatment, so then I wouldn't have to get them.
Oh, and my wonderful cousin is staying with me for a couple more days. She's so adorable, and cool, and she makes my heart sing. I'm going to miss her.
So for once, I made a non weather related post.
    The world is good today.
Oh and, the plumber came. He was flirting with me. Not only that, but he has a cute butt. Maybe an arranged marriage isn't required. Still, any desperate guys who like snails and other nerdy activities, contact my manager at 1800-HELPME.

EDIT: I am abandoning John Denver for emo music.
